Overcoming Mental Obstacles

By Woojoo Hong

Everyday, everyone faces mental obstacles. May it be a simple indecisive approach towards a question asked, or a struggle to act based off of oneself’s over thinking and self doubt. In any case, everyone faces these challenges on a daily basis, but reason out that this is natural, hence obligating themselves to accept invisible barriers, enabling them to be consumed by the acknowledgement of their own limitations. However, these questions embedded within self complications and psychological limitations have their inevitable truth and therefore countering solution.

These solutions are realizations of facts, rather than internal thoughts presumed by oneself’s innate subconscious. Accommodating one's desires towards a comfortable space, neglecting any coexistence with discomfort, drives the individual to face limitations set by themselves. For example, as a kid I used to hate avocados. They were green, soft, tasted like nothing, and above all a vegetable. However, it wasn’t until my friend’s mother made us avocado sandwiches after a long day of playing at the playground. Holding back my neglect and discomfort, I tried my best to hold back the contents of my stomach, knowing that it would all come out. But, it wasn’t until I took a bite, where I felt a pleasant taste, scouring my taste buds whilst flirting with my taste palette. It was blissful to have taken a bite because had I said no, I wouldn’t have known how tasteful an avocado can be. This was a story to share, but also an analogy that I wish you, the reader, to take into consideration.

The avocado to me can be an obstacle to you that you have determined you wouldn’t want to face or follow through with. However, carrying yourself with confidence and acknowledging that realistically it is you that’s holding yourself back, rather than anyone else, you can walk through this raggedy path to run into internal blissful freedom. Sure you may have your bias, skewing your thoughts to dislike, ultimately holding yourself back, same way I had my already determined presumptions on the discomforting qualities of an avocado. But every solution starts with a step, that follows another step, that follows another step. As long the process may be, certain factors may help ease the hardship of facing that obstacle that lies ahead of you. So try to help yourself by acknowledging the sources and people around you to ask for guidance and a helping hand. You may never want to face this obstacle of your own because you may think it is impossible or too difficult mentally, emotionally, physically, or spiritually. However, you never really know until you try.

Never hold yourself back on your assumptions because as Einstein once said, “”Assumptions are made and most assumptions are wrong”. Therefore, do not hold yourself back just because you thought otherwise with aversion, but face the problem with all you have because like always, there is light at the end of the tunnel. Fulfill all you can by living in the present and live with the fact that everything has its beginning and end. Remember “this too shall pass”, so show yourself some love and class.
